ABOUT AMELIA

Lately, life can feel like a dream — one where the magical and the absurd coexist so vividly that trying to reduce it back to something simple feels almost outdated. This is often how we encounter art at its best: immersive, overwhelming, and slightly unreal.

Rather than pulling the listener out of the dream, Los Angeles–based independent artist Amelia McLean does the opposite. She opens the door to her dark, moody, wildly fantastical inner world and lays every character inside it bare. Watching Amelia perform live checks every box you can almost — but not quite — put your finger on.

A classically trained pianist who began performing at age three and studying classical piano at seven, McLean grew up in Jackson, Michigan immersed in ’60s and ’70s pop, jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, and years of formal classical training. That foundation is unmistakable in her work: her presence behind the piano, the depth of her voice, and her commanding control of vocal stylings feel timeless without ever sounding dated. Instead, she modernizes those roots through strong structure, hybrid production, and emotional restraint.

Her music strips away gimmicks and polish to return to something more essential — songs that feel lived-in, personal, and earned. The emotional weight is never performed for effect; it arrives with intention and care.

After spending years honing her craft performing nightly in private clubs and luxury hotels, McLean moved to Nashville, where she worked as a songwriter while continuing to chase her own voice. Session work eventually led her to Los Angeles, where she began collaborating with producer Justin Glasco (Paris Paloma, Rufus Wainwright, The Lone Bellow). What followed was a constant ricochet of travel, recording, and work — all self-funded — with a singular focus on completing her debut album.

That album, Frowned Upon Daughter, is a stream-of-consciousness reflection on growing up in the Midwest, reckoning with darkness, vulnerability, and identity. It feels intimate without being indulgent — a labor of love that invites the listener into a world that is both deeply personal and quietly cinematic.

While her music carries old-soul sensibilities, Amelia McLean is undeniably modern. Her take-charge stage presence anchors every performance, reminding you that this isn’t nostalgia — it’s evolution.

Amelia is not only a brilliant singer with a smoky voice that’s sweet medicine for the ears—she’s also a gifted pianist who draws from her own life experiences in this collection of beautifully vulnerable songs, both haunting and funky at the same time.
— David Levita, Guitarist and Composer (Tim McGraw, Alanis Morissette, Sara Bareilles, Lana Del Rey, Hozier)
Her debut album... Frowned Upon Daughter... isn’t just music—it’s a beautifully tangled inner monologue, a journal cracked wide open and set to keys, strings, and a voice that somehow carries both ache and clarity at once. If you haven’t heard her name yet, don’t worry—you will. Probably in the middle of the night, when the world is quiet, and her songs find their way into the parts of you that don’t usually speak up.
